Cancel the ‘Opening Round Game’

The NCAA Opening Round Game is more painful than a Styx concert.

I’m watching this outstanding battle between hoop titans Alabama A&M and the Oakland Golden Grizz. I just watched a possession in which the ball was getting batted around the lane (and toward the hoop, occasionally) repeatedly. It looked a bit like a group of blindfolded kids armed with sticks swinging at pinatas.

The good news is, Oakland leads 7-0 after two minutes, so they’ve already covered the spread. This game is a complete and total joke, and has no business on the bracket. Around 15 years ago, there were three play-in games that were played between the winners of weak conferences. Those winners then went to the NCAA Tournament. Precious bracket ink was not wasted on these job squads. This game must be canceled. Play the play-in game off bracket. Tell the conferences who they are in advance, just like they used to do, and tell them to just report the winner of the play-in game to the committee by Sunday afternoon. The committee is too busy to think about the Debacle in Dayton. Better yet, take Valparaiso and put them in the Horizon League then force the Mid-Continent Conference into Division II.

I think Len Elmore just called me a knucklehead, by reference to all people who knock the Opening Round Game. Alabama A&M has made a run to cut it to 7-5. This concludes the live blogging of the Opening Round Game. I have to hustle down to my friends’ Opening Round Gala, where I have the number “8″ in the “total jumpballs in game” pool. I think I may win the money!

  1. Oh, I don’t know. There are few things more painful than a Styx concert. Except maybe a Celine Dion concert.
