Today during the St. Louis Cardinals’ home opener with the Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis’ television station WB-11 reported that Placido Polanco was given two contract offers in the 2004-05 offseason that he did not hear about until he had already agreed to submit to salary arbitration with the Phillies. According to WB-11, Polanco was offered a 3 year, $12 million deal to return to the Cardinals, who traded him for Scott Rolen in 2002, as well as a 2 year, $8 million deal by the Cleveland Indians.
Due to some heady work by Polanco’s three-man team of agents, dubbed by the telecast as “Larry, Curly, and Moe”, Polanco did not hear about the offers immediately, so he submitted to salary arbitration. The Phillies eventually offered Polanco one year at $4.6 million, avoiding arbitration.
Polanco has since retained new representation.
