A St. Francis man faces charges of animal cruelty after allegedly beating a cat with a hammer, causing the animal’s death with as many as 20 blows to the head, police said today.
Police Chief Brian Kaebisch said his department is seeking a felony charge with the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office against the suspect, accused of killing the cat after it was found wandering the halls of the man’s apartment building in the 2900 block of Bolivar Ave. on Aug. 29.
The case came to the attention of police when a resident reported the next day that she had heard thumping in the hallway between 11 p.m. and midnight. In the hallway, she saw a man and woman standing over a cat.
The man and woman told the resident to stay away from the cat because it bites, according to Kaebisch.
After learning of the incident, police visited the apartment complex and recovered the cat, which was put into a bag and then into a dumpster. They also recovered the hammer from the man’s apartment.
Kaebisch said the man admitted to striking the cat because it wouldn’t leave. The cat had bitten another resident who was attempting to catch it in the hallway, Kaebisch said, after which the suspect first struck the cat.
Residents told police the cat was well known in the building and had a history of wandering there. While it appeared several residents may have cared for the cat, no one admitted ownership, Kaebisch said.
I didn’t even know it was illegal to kill a stray cat. And if they thought that 20 blows to the head was excessive, how many are you allowed? 5? 10? Is it less cruel if you allow the cat to stay alive after the allotted number of hits?
According to the police chief, this cat had already bitten one person. The man who killed the cat was warning others to stay away for their protection. Next thing you know the cops are on the scene recovering the body, collecting the murder weapon and pushing for felony charges.
He should be strung up. If you did this to a human you would be put inside - why the difference. To have someone like this roaming our streets is a danger to other people and animals.
He should get years in prison. Disgusting.

People like you are why animals are treated inhumanely. We have animal control officers for these very situations. I don’t know maybe we should start beating child molestors, rapists and murderers to death with hammers (really I could think of more agonizing deaths for such convicted criminals. The key word is convicted. This was an innocent, scared, homeless animal. The civil and humane thing to do would be to call animal control and let them handle the situation.

After the first 5 or 6 whacks, the cat was probably unconscious anyway, so what,s another 15 blows? The only bad thing i can say about the guy is he got caught and gave the cops his hammer. Never cooperate witht he police, dude. If it was me, I would have enticed the cat into my apartment, wrapped him in a burlap sack, then thew him in the tub. Once there, I would’ve either drowned him or scalded him to death, depending on whichever mood struck me at the time.

charging a man for killing a cat is absurd! if killing cat is a crime, then the cat should be charged with assault for biting the other resident. however if actual charges against the cat were to be brought to court, everybody would think that the person pressing charges was a utter and complete basketcase.

i agree with the killing of cats,i have killed 6 to 7 hundred so far,the best way is to trap them live,take them where no cat loving idiot will see or hear,and shoot it,i cut there paws off,soak them in alcohol for a couple of months,then make key rings out of them,sell the for $5 each,so that 20 bucks walking around in your yard,i could make lots more if i skinned them,but theres too many,at least i keep the population down,and each cat will get me a case of beer!!!

I’m being charged for shooting a stray cat with a pellet gun after many days of trying to get animal control to do anything. one day i walked into the garage and notice, YET ANOTHER yellow spot on th white clothes…. cat piss.. and decided today i was going to catch it….. i tried with a net.. it tore through and scratched my pregnant girlfriend…. so i grabbed my BB gun and shot…. after realizing cats aren’t all that easy to kill i finished the poor thing off with the closest thing to me .. a rake…. now i am looking at 3 yrs probabtion 8-0 days jail, 1500$ fine, and anger management……. i love cats.. and i’m not angry… but someone had to get rid of the damn thing……. this whole animal rights bullshit has gone way to far.. where is the common sense

Stray cats are a menace to songbirds ,carry disease ,ticks and a host for rabies .PLEASE do not allow cats to roam unneutered or unspayed . Unfortunately It IS neccessary to kill strays.Any body who has worked at a pound or “INHUMANE center ” like I have know that 95% of animals that are brought in must be euthanized .A claw hammer may sound cruel BUT the animal would have beeen killed anyway due to the fact that no one would claim it and it has bitten people .If people do not keep the intelligence to control animals that are pets then they must face the facts that any animal that is a pet and goes wild has NO rights at all. sorry to sound cruel but I have had to kill hundreds of thousands of dogs ,cats ,rats ,guinea pigs etc.because idiot bleeding hearts are so horribly double standard .

best way to get rid of cats without having to deal with the mess is to put a couple cans of tuna fish out with antifreeze mixed in it. then the chances are that the cat will end up dead in one of these cat lovers yards. 2 birds one stone.

What’s the big deal? I kill cats all the time. I get off on it. I usually only kill a cat every now and then. They a getting pretty scarce in my neighborhood. But last fall, I was able to kill 35 in one day. It was awesome.
