Coach too friendly with ref during soccer match?
Soccer is a very different sport from the traditional American games. Soccer matches are played under an honor code which render “dives” (soccer equivalent of a “flop” to draw a charge in a basketball game) unsportsmanlike and routinely punished by officials. Similar actions in other sports are often technically against the rules, though [...]

Paris’ 2012 bid to be crushed by unions?
The French hate to work and, thus, they love to strike. While the rather common strikes are often cause for a day of celebration in certain cities in Europe (no work today, public transportation is on strike!), this strike might be the downfall of Paris’ bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics. The strikes [...]

The Executioner makes it 20 in a row
Middleweight champ Bernard Hopkins hasn’t lost in over 12 years.
Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins made his historic 20th title defense tonight in Los Angeles against tough fighter Howard Eastman. The fight was delayed about 40 minutes because Hopkins hadn’t taped his hands yet. When the fight did start there were 6 punches total landed [...]

U.S. Soccer drives toward World Cup 2006
If there’s one truly hidden gem in the sports world in this nation, it is the men’s national soccer team. Eliminated in the round of eight just two and a half years ago in the World Cup in Japan and South Korea, expectations for the American squad have never been higher. Attendance figures [...]

Girls’ basketball game ends in brawl
I’ve seen or officiated a lot of girls’ basketball games in my career. Here are my observations about such events:
Average number of points scored, per 32 minutes: 67
Average number of jump balls, per 32 minutes: 6.23
Average number of fouls, per 32 minutes: 28.23
Odds a fight will break out between the teams or fans: approximately [...]

The Champ is Back
Lennox Lewis: The only legitimate heavyweight champion this side of Y2k is reportedly ready to make a comeback. Who wouldn’t for a payday of $39.1 million?
If true, he will rematch with WBC champ Vitali Klitschko (the older brother).
“I’ve had to listen to a lot of rubbish from Klitschko and he is starting to get [...]

Piazza engaged, media seems shocked
Mike Piazza is engaged to his long-time girlfriend, former Playmate and Baywatch actress Alicia Rickter. This, in and of itself, wouldn’t be that big a story. However, the media has frequently speculated that the New York Mets’ star is a homosexual, and so the media play on this has come out of surprise, [...]
